Finally, here´s newsletter 2! It did cost a longlong time before a new story entered the site but I promise to do better in the future.
Of course there has happened a lot the past 10 months. Because I´ve got a lot to tell you about Caras Alegres, that´s what I´ll start with. After that is a lot more to read about my life next to Caras Alegres.
Caras Alegres (www.carasalegres.org):
Caras Alegres is a Dutch foundation, founded in 2004 by Marcel and Judith van der Geest. Since march 1st 2005 Caras Alegres is situated in the second largest city of Guatemala, Quetzaltenango (or: Xela) in the district ´Las Rosas´. The goal of the foundation is to promote and improve the welfare and social position of the families in this district. We are working close with the ´Escuela de la calle´ (EDELAC), at this moment all the activities from Caras Alegres find place in some classes and at the playground of Edelac. Edelac is an infant and primary school which, thanks to its low costs for students, can offer education for most poor families in Las Rosas.
A number of the daily activities of Caras Alegres:
- We offer afterschool care from Monday till Friday from 2.00 pm till 4.30 pm. In these afternoons we offer the children to participate at several activities at Caras Alegres. These activities were created to learn the children: to play together with respect, to share, how to play with rules and to treat the other children and volunteers with respect. The children are in the age-group of 4 to 15 years old. Every first week of the month with all the volunteers we plan and organize workshops to improve certain skills of the children (you can think about: carpentry, cooking, painting etc). Every last Friday of the month we celebrate all the birthdays of the children from that month, this day also exists of several plays or activities with the children, eating of cake, hitting the piñata (very popular here) and of course, presents for the birthday kids.
- Caras Alegres offers also an infant school from 8 pm to 12.30 pm for the youngest (4 and 5 years old).
- 4 days a week, from 12.45 pm till 3 pm, we offer extra lessons for the children who for example need help with maths, reading or writing. Hereby we try to combine max 3 children to 1 volunteer so that the children get the attention they need.
- Helping families, we receive money from different sources in Holland and Spain which we convert in food-parcels, scholarships for children who want to continue school after EDELAC, school materials and school clothes and paying house rentals.
The 14th of January, the construction of our own building started (directly next to the school of Edelac). Unfortunately they stopped in March due to a temporarily shortage of money. But we expect them to continue any moment now and when it´s finished, we´ll be able to offer more because we shall have our own classrooms. You can think about more specific lessons like music, theatre, cooking, sewing. And this not only for the children, but also for the women from Las Rosas so that they´ll be able, with this extra knowledge, to obtain more independence for themselves (because for example, they can make their own money).
The neighbourhood:
Caras Alegres is situated in zone 5 of Xela in the district ´Las Rosas´ (the roses). Kind of misleading because you won´t find many flowers in this area. Las Rosas on itself is a poor district, but also in poor areas you´ll find a big difference in poor and poor. Some families for example can cook on gas, while others will have to do with wood. One child has decent clothes while the other has shoes where it´s toes stick out.
My work:
The past couple of months have been wonderful at Caras Alegres, I started mid September, the first couple of weeks it was quite calm and nice to get to know the children better. As from half October till the first week of December it has been intensive weeks. Every week has been a workshop week or a theme week. This was because the primary schools in Guatemala close as from half October till the first week of January. Therefore we want to offer the children more workshops, theme weeks etc. From January on we´ve had a workshop week every first week of the month and we will continue this again till the end of the year. Before every workshop week we have a meeting with all the volunteers (aprox. 6 to 8) and Marcel and Judith to discuss what kind of workshops we are going to organize. Last year I did the same work as all the other volunteers, so coming up with and organising workshops and entertaining the children. As of the beginning of this year I´m the coordinator of volunteers, which gives me the following extra tasks: finding of and instructing new volunteers, paying our Guatemalan employees, replying emails from the Caras Alegres mailbox. A great position where I learn a lot from the volunteers who come and work with us (they normally stay in between 2 and 4 months).
I´ll write down some of the workshops and activities.
Workshops:
- Cooking: the first workshop I could lead was cooking. Not really my strength as the local supermarket in Holland had been my steady supplier of readymade meals. Unfortunately I couldn’t find them over here, but luckily there are enough easy-to-make-meals on the internet. 1 day spaghetti, 1 day cake, 1 day hamburgers, 1 day coctel (fruit salad with a too sweet cream on top of it). Funny to see that most of the children didn’t eat all at once, but took part of what they´d been cooking home.
- Experimentos y ciencia (science): created and organized by the super creative ex-volunteers Lies and Ils, they introduced activities like: How to stick a needle in a balloon without banging it, How many children can stand on a table which is upside down and placed on a bag of balloons / make your own super foam bubbles. The children really enjoyed themselves.
- Photo story and video: 2 volunteers have made a story made of photos with the leading theme expressing different emotions. Following they filmed the children while they had to do a show through a puppet theatre.
- Carpentry: With jigsaws the children already made a puppet theatre and a wooden calendar.
- Other activities were: circus activities, making of bracelets and other jewellery, making kites, drawing with alternative materials, various sport and competition games.
- Fridays in a workshop week the children will present what they´ve been doing that week. A nice lesson to teach them how to present in front of a group, although most of them need a bit of help...
Other activities at Caras Alegres:
- Swimming: On the 23rd of November we went swimming with all the kids some parents and teachers, which was possible with the money which one of the volunteers had raised in Holland. Swimming normally isn´t possible for the children of Las Rosas, so it was lots of fun for them. With 2 rented chicken busses we went away to a swimming pool 30 minutes driving. All the children stayed in the undeep pool, because swimming is something they can´t.
- Chicabal: The 5th and 6th of December we went with a group of 40 children to Chicabal, a volcano not to far from Xela. We organized this trip together with the Quetzaltrekkers. The 5th of December we drove, again with a chicken bus, towards Chicabal. After the bus ride it was quite a bit of walking before we entered the terrain where the tents where put up by the Quetzaltrekkers. The 5th of December we organized a couple of games and furthermore we collected wood so we were able to make a campfire at night. Surprisingly fast the children went asleep in their tents (without alcohol....) so we could wake up early the next morning (there was also no other option with 3 snoring kids next to you in your tent while it´s below freezing point outside). Next day we went climbing the volcano, first we arrived to a point where you had a wonderful view over the Santa Maria and the Crater lake. Eventually we descended to the crater lake where every child, with brother(s), sister(s), cousin, mother or aunt wanted to be on a picture. Hereby a compilation:
- Beneficial parties: The evening and night from the 31st of October till the 1st of November Caras Alegres and Nuevos Horizontes (a foundation which offers care for children and their mothers who live in harsh or violent conditions) organized a beneficial party. Many afternoons and evenings all the volunteers spread out in the centre of Xela to hang up posters and spread flyers to promote this party. Because it was Halloween, there were more parties in Xela that evening, our advantage though was that we had an after party too (till 4 am). We could use an empty restaurant, a great location which all of us decorated in Halloween style. The evening itself was a success, very busy, good music and everyone enjoyed themselves including me who finally could stand behind instead of in front of the bar! Earned quite a lot of Quetzals (?? Of Guatemala) with which we can buy materials for both of the foundations.
Very recently we had our 2nd beneficial party, the 14th of February we arranged a dinner and party with the Quetzaltrekkers. We could use the same restaurant we did the party before. This time the atmosphere was of course in valentine style, but with a Dutch treat, one of the volunteers made ´kroketten´ and Judith made ´boterkoek´, ´kaassoufle´s´ and ´apple pie´, all for sale. - The 20th of October we (the volunteers) were invited to a birthday party of one of the children from Caras Alegres. Whole the family was there, including all the volunteers. Tradition here is: no birthday without a piñata, so all the children could enjoy themselves destroying the piñata.
- Birthdays at Caras Alegres: Every last Friday of the month we celebrate all the birthdays of the children who had their birthday that month. They can pick their own presents (most of them chose shoes) and the day will normally be split into two parts, the first part for games and plays for the children, the second part we have the piñata. Mostly we split up the group for the piñata in 2 groups, young and old, because the children will attack the candy falling out of the piñata with risk of their own lives.
- Refaccion: Every day we have at Caras Alegres at 3.15 pm a short break (Refaccion) in which the children are given bread (pan dulce) and lemonade.
- Karate: We got in touch with a teacher of karate. He gave us a lesson in November, it was funny to see how quickly he was able to control the group of children. I´m happy to say that as from February he´s giving classes of karate every week.
- Cleaning activity: On may 2nd we´ve had a cleaning activity with the 3rd till 6th graders from school, we did this at ´El Baul´, a viewpoint on one of the hills that surrounds Xela. Next to the beautiful view over Xela you got here, it´s a picnic and playground for many people from Xela and tourists. Thus, lots of garbage what normally isn´t thrown in the garbage can but in nature. The karate teacher took the initiative to clean this terrain, together with the 4 classes, a couple of teachers and children from the karate school. This not only to clean up the garbage, but also to teach the children that it is important to keep your country clean. A very successful morning which was followed by a karate lesson for everyone and a karate demonstration.
- Day of the child: This day we helped the children to dress up and paint their faces like a clown. An initiative on which all the teachers and volunteers participated.
- Start of the construction, the first stone: The beginning of the school year (here in January) was the moment for us to start building our new building. Together with all the children of EDELAC, a couple of parents and the teachers we celebrated the start of the construction. About 200 balloons in the colours of Caras Alegres (orange and white) were set free up in the air and there was cake and soda. Our planning right now is that we can open our new building with the start of the next school year.
- Visit of doctors: 4 and 5 June we had a doctor team visiting us (EDELAC). Inge Loman, and ex volunteer of Caras Alegres (and also my roommate) and at the moment working for the clinic ´Salud y Paz´ arranged a doctor team for whole EDELAC. 2 whole days a team of 20 people from the US, including 5 doctors, examined the children of EDELAC. Other people from the neighbourhood ´Las Rosas´ could also inscribe for a minimum payment to be examined and if necessary be treated. A great initiative because going to the doctor, even if you´re sick, isn´t the priority here (or possible for lots of families). In the next newsletter, there will be more to read about this visit of doctors.
What do I do next to my work at Caras Alegres in Guatemala?
Well, what about travelling through the country, incredibly beautiful and impressive. I´ve made the following short trips:
- Xetulul and Xocomil: 2 amusement parks next to each other and about 1,5 hour driving from Xela. The 27th of October we went with the Spanish school where I follow Spanish classes, and a couple of students to Xetulul, an amusement park in the style of Six Flags, but then in the style of different countries from all over the world. But way more beautiful was Xocomil where we went the 2nd of December. A great water park with the best waterslides, great to enjoy yourself in 30 degrees Celsius (there where Xela lies at an altitude of 2200 meters, these parks are much more in the direction of sea level, thus warmer).
- Climbing the Santa Maria: Xela´s big neighbour is the volcano Santa Maria. Nice to see from down here but more beautiful to climb it and look at Xela from up there. And there we went the 10th of November, Ine, Hannes, Katrien, Lies, Ils, Maike, I and the guide. Amazing views on the way upwards but also amazingly heavy.... Especially when we came above 3 km altitude (the Santa Maria is 3800 meters high) it was literally breath taking. Again it was beautiful to be standing on top of the volcano and be able to look in every direction for miles and miles and see the other volcanoes of Guatemala (under which the Tajamulco, the highest volcano of Central America). Against the Santa Maria lies the still active volcano Santiaguito. This one is supposed to explode one or 2 times an hour, but unfortunately we haven´t seen an explosion. When there were clouds above the Santiaguito we did hear an explosion, but to see one I´ll have to climb it ones more.
- Lago Atitlan: Together with Hannes, Ine, Lies, Ils and Katrien we went to Panajachel at Lago (= lake) Atitlan from the 1st till the 3rd of November. Absolutely beautiful with a view at the other side of the lake with it´s 3 volcanoes. We made a tour on the lake and visited different villages at the lake: 1. Santiago Atitlan, Aggressive salesmen (which is rare in Guatemala), 2. San Pedro la Laguna, nice little village with lots of tourists who still seem to live in the 70´s, peace, love and drugs, 3. San Marcos la Laguna, very small village where you can get your rest if you suffer from a mental breakdown... Anyway, a good weekend with a great group.
- Flores / Tikal: With Lies, Ils, Katrien, Annet and Sandra we went in December for a couple of days to Flores. A nice and small town up north in Guatemala. Flores lays about an hour from Tikal, 1 of the most famous (touristic) places in Guatemala because of its many Mayan temples. We booked the ´sunrise tour´ to Tikal, so we were picked up from the hotel at 5 am and arrived before sunrise in Tikal. In the dark we climbed up one of the temples and above this temple it was waiting for the sun to come up. This tour is famous for its magical view what you´ll get when dark slowly turns into light and the temples will appear one by one in the rainforest in front of your eyes. Bummer, we had fog that wouldn´t get out of the way.... So no magic for us, but still very impressive though to hear the rainforest awaken and then the mostly the roaring monkeys. What a noise can make these hobbit-sized monkeys! The park itself is nice, but very man-made which excludes the feeling of being in the middle of the rainforest and be the first human being to see the temples. But, as you can see on the pictures, it still is impressive. A day before going to Tikal we went to the caves of Actun-Kan. We had 2 choices, to take the short and easy route or the long and hard route. We (ignorant tourists) chose the last route. Difficult meant: a walk of 3 hours through the cave, climbing up on slippery paths with the help of a slimy rope, climbing up and down through narrow openings, bumping your head about 12 times a second, not seeing anything cause we had 3 flashlights (which batteries began to ran out of energy). In other words, nothing for those with claustrophobia! Very funny also that our tour guide lost his way (or pretended that he did) at the end of our tour (which we didn´t know at that time). At the time when we were about to scream he did find the way to the exit.
- On vacation with my parents: in march this year: in March my parents visited me for 3 weeks, after the first week in Xela and having seen Caras Alegres we went on holiday. Via Lago Atitlan we arrived in a hostel nearby Lanquin in central Guatemala. This place is famous for being nearby Semuc Champey, a beautiful waterfall where you can swim on different levels. Very beautiful to see, especially when with sunny weather you´ll see different colours in the separate ´baths´. Via Semuc we travelled to Flores/Tikal to do the sunrise tour. This time with success and now we had view over the other pyramids from above one of them when the sun rose.
- In may 2 friends of mine visited me, Frank and Marieke. After first visiting the project and Xela they went exploring Guatemala. I joined them a week later in Copan (Honduras), we visited the well-known ruins over there and after that we headed for the Bay Islands, Roatan. Spent a couple of days on the beach, been snorkelling and drinking the worst beer of Latin America (´Salva Vida´, they say the strongest beer from Honduras but I thought it tasted like water from the tap).
As I wrote in newsletter 1 I´ll discuss 2 subjects about Guatemala every newsletter, so hereby:
- Alcohol: A mayor problem in Guatemala, not for it´s poor quality… but because people drink it way to mucho over here. Mostly the men have alcohol problems, therefore it is a normal thing that at 12 o´clock at noon you´ll see drunken men laying on the street or sidewalks totally wasted. Women are normally the basis of a family in Guatemala.
Luckily there are also positive things to say about booze. For example that the local beer, Gallo, is the only beer who has won 10 times in a row a medal. Cocktails are regularly the same price as beer, so good news for the women.
Non-alcoholic drinks are also very tasty, liquados for example, made of fresh fruit, ice and/or milk, put it in the blender and ready. - Food: In the lonely planet they say the following about the food in Guatemala: ´If you want food that will tingle your palate´s imagination long after your trip is over, go to Thailand because you won´t find much memorable food here´. And unfortunately they´re right. Specialities here are: tortillas (not as good as the Mexican ones) often served with beans and guacemole (very tasty), tamales or patches (a mixture of rice or potatoes and chicken of meat wrapped in some sort of banana leaves).
This was it for newsletter no.2 and as I mentioned in the beginning, the next newsletter will appear sooner! Thank you for reading!
Abrazo, Lennert
